The HIStory of abortion

Since before recorded history Woman held control of her fertility. Before mediaeval times midwives were the gatekeepers of the sacred wisdom through herbs and fertility.

The role of a midwife was to support woman holistically in all areas of birth and death, including abortion.

For as long as there has been midwives and pregnancy, herbal abortion has existed.

It’s only been in recent times that woman has given the power to the medical system over her sovereignty.

In the 1800s we saw women turning this sacred information over to the hands of doctors and politicians, who had nothing to do with birth until this time.

Que the witch burnings. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Woman was stripped of her wisdom and her rights. Turning these rights over to a male run system of medicine and gynaecology.

This system was headed by J Marion Sims who was infamous for forcing experimental procedures onto coloured women without anaesthesia. He and the medical committee worked towards criminalising reproductive freedom in 1973.

This law has created negative attitudes and beliefs in our society around abortion.

It has created a barrier for woman and their choices over their own body.

These attitudes cause isolation and force woman to choose unsafe services.

In 1990 the annual abortion death rate was 1 500 000.

The number dropped to 900 000 in 2011 as more women had access to contraception and education.

So “Why” in 2022 is there still so much stigma and shame?

This stigma and shame silences woman.

With more than half of pregnancies unintended and a quarter end in termination.

We need to dissolve the barriers.

We need to talk about these hard conversations.

Otherwise we will be back there.

Being controlled

Legalising the control of women in this time and space must stop.

Where does it stop.
